The genetic twin of Charles Xavier (later Professor X), Cassandra Nova barely survived an attack in utero, where the fetus Xavier attempted to strangle her in the womb. Nova was unseen for decades before surfacing fairly recently, when she convinced Donald Trask to help her to develop an army of wild Sentinels. She soon slew Trask and took full control of the project, sending the Sentinels to Genosha, where they massacred over ten million mutants. Nova failed in an attempt to take control of Cerebra and was placed in suspended animation by the X-Men, but she escaped by swapping minds with Xavier. While in his form, Nova mentally forced Beak to bludgeon the Beast with a baseball bat before forcing the youth to tear his own feathers out. She then bluffed her way onboard a Shi'Ar ship and convinced them that the Phoenix Force had returned to Earth, causing the Imperial Guard to attack the X-Men. Nova was seemingly killed when her neck was snapped by Emma Frost and Xavier shot her in the head repeatedly, but she somehow survived, most likely by taking on the identity of Ernst, a member of the Xavier Institute's remedial class. Nova has recently been seen to be a member of the reorganized Hellfire Club.

Nova is a member of the homo sapiens supreme genus, which is as far beyond homo superior (mutants) as they are to common humanity. She possesses the superhuman ability to alter her own DNA at will, and to heal from virtually any injury nearly instantaneously. She possesses telepathic abilities that rival her brother Xavier's, and she is able to mentally control or swap minds with others.

Nova has an enlarged hairless cranium. She is a member of the Hellfire Club and a possible former student of the Xavier Institute.
